Instruction for Post-extraction Care

Instruction for Post-extraction Care

  1. The child should keep and press the sterile gauze pack on the extraction site for at least 20 minutes. The child should not chew the gauze piece.
  2. The child can eat ice cream after 20-30 minutes when the gauze piece has been removed, and it is ensured that bleeding has stopped.
  3. The lip and the soft tissues are numb for a few hours after tooth extraction. Care should be exercised so that the child will not bite the lip; otherwise, the lip will become swollen and bruised.
  4. Straw should not be used for drinking for 24 hours after the extraction.
  5. Lukewarm soup and soft foods are recommended on the day of the extraction.
  6. Mouthwashes and rinsing the mouth should be avoided on the surgery and tooth extraction day.
  7. The other teeth in the mouth can be brushed.
  8. If there is pain, the pain killers prescribed by the dentist should be taken.
  9. To prevent bleeding and swelling, two or three pillows should be used to raise the head during sleep.
  10. Avoid spitting because it increases bleeding. Please note that a small amount of blood mixed with saliva appears to be a large amount of blood, which should not be a source of concern for parents.
  11. If bleeding re-starts, place a piece of sterile gauze or a clean piece of cloth or a tea bag on the area and bite it for 45-60 minutes. The gauze piece should not be chewed.
  12. After heavy surgeries, placing an ice pack on the surgical site for 24 hours can decrease swelling. The ice pack should be placed for 10 minutes and removed for 10 minutes.
  13. After relatively heavy surgeries, blue or black discoloration occurs in many cases, which is not an important issue.
