Instruction after Root Canal Treatment, Restorative Procedures or Placing Crowns

  1. Avoid eating rigid or stiff foodstuff for at least one hour.
  2. If the procedure involves a large amalgam restoration, use the other side of the mouth to eat food.
  3. There might be pain after treatment. Give the pain killer prescribed by the dentist (usually acetaminophen syrup) immediately after treatment. If pain persists, give the pain killer to the child every 6 hours for 1 to 2 days after treatment.
  4. Usually, there is a small amount of bleeding after treatment (especially after placing metallic crowns), which is not a source of concern.
  5. The lip and soft tissues are numb for a few hours after treatment. Take care to prevent the child from biting his/her lip; otherwise, the lip will become swollen and ulcerated.
  6. A toothbrush and dental floss should certainly be used.
  7. The gingiva should be massaged with a lukewarm saline solution (salt water) or physiologic serum to decrease gingival inflammation. It should be remembered that not observing oral hygiene measures will result in gingival inflammation and bleeding.
