The dental changes induced by a pacifier are very similar to the changes induced by thumb sucking (please refer to the section on ‘thumb sucking’). Children who use a pacifier exhibit anterior open bite (i.e., a disctance between the upper and lower anterior teeth) and maxillary arch stricture (posterior cross-bite). Minor changes are observed after using a pacifier for 18 months. However, after 36 months of pacifier use, these changes will be significant.
Recommendations for Parents
- It appears the pacifier habit ends faster than the thumb-sucking habit.
- The child should be weaned from the pacifier at around 18-36 months of age.
