The presence or absence of the parents during the treatment procedure is among the most challenging decisions in pediatric dentistry and depends on various factors. The parents are always interested in accompanying their children during the procedure, which is especially helpful in the case of very young and debilitated children. Anyway, finally, the dentists decide about the presence or absence of the parents.
In the pediatric specialty clinic of Dr. Romina Mazaheri, the parents accompany their children during the dental procedures and can take their children’s hand in their hand, which calms and encourages the children. However, the parents are advised not to speak to their children during the procedure and allow the dentist to talk to them; otherwise, the children’s attention will be divided between their parents (on whom they strongly depend) and the dentist (who is a new and unknown person). Therefore, the children will not be able to concentrate on this new relationship, resulting in confusion.
In some cases, due to a child’s maladaptive behavior, it might be necessary for parents to go out of the operatory for 3-5 minutes (until the child becomes cooperative) and return to the operatory after the child’s cooperation and promise to continue cooperation. The parents are kindly recommended to respect the pediatric dentist’s request and obey her in the event of such a request. This requent is made only to pave the way for the child’s compliance and establish a good rapport between the child and the dentist.
