It is recommended that a pedodontist examine the child, in addition to a general dental practitioner. One of the etiologic factors for tooth grinding is anxiety and stress. A change in the environment and entering a new location such as a kindergarten or school and a troubled home environment due to arguments or family rows between the parents might result in nocturnal tooth grinding or bruxism. The use of some medicines and some medical conditions, such as hyperactivity, too, might be etiologic factors for bruxism. According to medical specialists, tooth grinding is common in children <11 years of age, and some believe that it is a stage in the growth and development of the child. Fortunately, it is a short-lived condition in many children, and no therapeutic intervention is necessary.
Preventive and Therapeutic Measures
- If there are signs of abrasion or wear on permanent teeth, oral protective appliances are recommended during sleep, which are usually soft and made of silicone. They prevent tooth wear and help break the habit.
- If the child exhibits stress and anxiety, consultation with a psychiatrist is recommended.
- Some sporting drills and activities for the maxillofacial region are helpful.
- The parents are kindly recommended to provide a quiet and enjoyable sleep for their children. It is advisable for their parents to embrace their children when they go to bed, read storybooks for them, or listen to soft music with them. Watching cartoons and playing video games are not recommended at all before going to bed.
